The IHRD established Model Engineering College in 1989 to provide quality engineering education in Kerala's industrial center. It was founded as a self-supporting college with some autonomy. The college began operations in August 1989 on the campus of Edapally High School, offering four degree courses in Biomedical, Computer Science, Electronics Engineering, and Electrical engineering, as well as four master's degrees in Electronics Engineering (VLSI & Embedded Systems), Electronics Engineering (Signal Processing), Electronics Engineering (Opto Electronics), and Computer Science & Engineering (Image Processing). Model Engineering College was the first self-financing college under the Government of Kerala and the first college affiliated with CUSAT when it was founded. In September 1994, the college relocated to its current campus in Thrikkakara and has since grown into an institution of excellence.
