The National Institute of Engineering (NIE) was founded in 1946 and is controlled by a recognised organisation, with nine out of ten current directors being renowned graduates. The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi, has authorised NIE as a grant-in-aid institution. In 2007, Visvesvaraya Technological University, Belagavi, granted NIE autonomy. NAAC has given it its seal of approval. The National Board of Accreditation, New Delhi, has granted Tier-I accreditation to four undergraduate programmes – Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electronics & Communication Engineering, and Industrial & Production Engineering – and one postgraduate programme – Structural Engineering. For QIP, all of NIE's departments have been designated as Research Centres by VTU and AICTE. NIE currently offers seven undergraduate and twelve graduate programs.
