The Indian Border Guarding Unit, also known as the Border Security Force or BSF, is a paramilitary force that was founded on December 1, 1965. BSF is a Union Government Agency under the administrative responsibility of the Ministry of Home Affairs that is responsible for policing India's land border during peacetime and preventing transnational crime. With a strength of 240,000 troops in 186 battalions, including women personnel, it is one of India's law enforcement organizations and now stands as the world's largest border guarding force. BSF's motto is "Duty Unto Death."
The BSF is divided into three operating branches: the General Branch, the Technical Branch, and the Medical Branch. The General Duty Branch is responsible for all BSF general duties. They are also responsible for the vigilance charge. Technical Branch is in charge of any technical work that is required from time to time for the force's proper operation. This division is responsible for the upkeep and repair of telecommunications and construction equipment. Medical Branch provides all medical facilities and assumes full responsibility for personnel's fitness and well-being.
BSF offers careers for 10th grade to graduates in different streams. Graduates can write entrance exam conducted by UPSC and shortlisted candidates are selected as Assistant Commandants. BSF also offers jobs for qualified medical professionals.
As the name suggests, job in BSF involves guarding east and west borders of India. BSF offers a rewarding career and opportunities are available post retirement. The job carries pride and sacrifices including time from family, unfriendly terrain and others are some of the downsides of the career. But when interested to serve the country in uniform, all these look small.
