All of the departments that administer the State administration are part of the civil service, which is the backbone of the Indian government apparatus. It's highly competitive and tough field that includes a wide range of occupations in several departments with job security.
It is a very prestigious job and comes with high amount of power and comes with huge responsibility to handle the role. Union Public service commission (UPSC), the apex body conducts All India Combined Competitive Examination for Civil Services for entry into 24different civil services including Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS), Indian Railway Service (IRS) and many other services. All these services are classified into A and B groups based on the service.
The selection process is of three levels with shortlisting after each round. Its starts with Preliminary examination, Main examination & Personal interview by distinguished panel. More than 8 lakh aspirants apply for less than 1000 posts that are available each year.
Any Indian citizen who is has completed his graduation or waiting for results is eligible for applying for the examination. Apart from Indian citizens of Nepal and Bhutan can also apply. Tibetan refugees, Indian origin persons who have migrated to Sri Lanka, Kenya, Pakistan, Myanmar and some other countries who want to permanently settle in India can take the test.
Persons in the age bracket of 21 – 32 can apply and there are age relaxations for certain back ward communities, personnel serving in armed forces,&physically challenged.
