The late Dr. Rajendra Prasad, the first President of India, lay the foundation stone for the Kurukshetra University when it was founded as a unitary residential university in 1956. Its campus is situated on the western bank of Brahm Sarover (the holy tank), which covers an area of more than 400 acres, and is located in Kurukshetra, the holy city that is home to both the Bhagwad Gita and the epic conflict of the "Mahabharata." It started out as a single department of Sanskrit but has since expanded into a multi-faculty university that is now regarded as one of the top centres for advanced study and research in the area.
