In 1974, the Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya (BCKV), with its main office in Mohanpur, Nadia, was founded. In its more than 40 years of existence, this university has contributed significantly to the advancement of agricultural education, research, and extension. The university's initial core faculties were Veterinary Sciences and Agriculture. Agro-ecological conditions in the northern part of West Bengal, where the university's main campus is located, are very different from those in South Bengal, where the university's main campus is located. As a result, the North Bengal campus of BCKV was established at Pundibari, Cooch Behar, in the year 1980 to meet the needs of agricultural education and research in this region. The faculty of Veterinary Sciences was split off in 1995 to form a new institution, West Bengal University of Animal and Fishery Sciences, while the newly established university was working to gradually reconstruct various facilities on the several campuses. With the establishment of Uttar Banga Krishi Viswavidyalaya (UBKV) in 2001, it was further divided into two agricultural universities using the infrastructure of the former North Bengal Campus of B C K V and its other infrastructure located in the districts of Cooch Behar, Jalpaiguri, Darjeeling, Malda, and North-and South-Dinajpur. At that time, the existing Faculty of Agriculture under BCKV received two new faculties: Faculty of Horticulture and Faculty of Agricultural Engineering. For the exclusive purpose of teaching undergraduate studies in agriculture, the university recently opened two expanded campuses as colleges of agriculture at Burdwan (in 2014) and Bankura (in 2015).
