The renowned social reformer Thakur Panchanan Barma inspired the naming of COOCH BEHAR PANCHANAN BARMA UNIVERSITY. Panchanan Barma, sometimes referred to as Thakur Panchanan and Roy Saheb, was a Cooch Behar-born Rajbanshi leader and reformer. In order to instil Brahminical principles and practises among the members of the Rajbanshi community in this area specifically and in Bengal generally, he founded the Kshatriya Sabha. In the former Cooch Behar State's Khalisamari village, Thakur Panchanan Barma (1866–1935) was born. In 1893, he received an honours degree in Sanskrit from Victoria College, Cooch Behar, which at the time was a part of the University of Calcutta. He later earned his MA and LLB degrees from the same university in 1897 and 1898, respectively.
