The sixth Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati, was founded in 1994. IIT Guwahati began its academic programme in 1995. The institute comprises eleven departments and five inter-disciplinary academic centres that offer BTech, BDes, MA, MDes, MTech, MSc, and PhD programmes in engineering, science, and humanities fields.
IIT Guwahati has been able to construct world-class infrastructure for advanced research and is equipped with state-of-the-art scientific and engineering instruments in a short period of time. The campus of IIT Guwahati is located on a 285-hectare plot of land on the north bank of the Brahmaputra River, some 20 kilometres from Guwahati. The campus provides a great academic environment, with the majestic Brahmaputra on one side and hills and large open spaces on the other.
