About

A medical college in Lucknow was first proposed in 1870 by the Maharaja of Vijanagaram. But owing to a lack of funding, the concept was scaled back. The idea to start a college to honour the anniversary was prompted by King-Emperor George V's visit in 1905 while he was still the Prince of Wales. It was the late Raja Sir Tassadnq Rasul Khan of Jehangirabad, to whom Sir Harcourt Butler wrote on December 1st, 1905, who came up with this lovely notion to mark the event. The fact that you came up with the first idea for such a movement all on your own must always make you feel proud.

The Secretary to the Government of Uttar Pradesh wrote to the Registrar of Allahabad University on March 22. "Subscribers to the King George's Medical College Foundation want this college to be the greatest in the East, and the government wants the college to provide the best education for its students." Everyone enthusiastically embraced the proposal, and the Taluqdars and Zamindars of Agra and Oudh generously donated. Sir Harcourt Butler was primarily to blame for the scheme's quick development thanks to his drive to gather subscriptions and organisational skills.
