The Hon'ble Prime Minister of India at the time, Late Smt. Indira Gandhi, lay the foundation stone for the Narendra Dev University of Agriculture & Technology at Mashodha, outside of the city of Faizabad, on January 15, 1974. As an officer on special duty, Shri Laxmi Narain Rai, a PCS officer with the Agriculture Department of the Government of Uttar Pradesh, was assigned. Dr. A.S. Srivastava succeeded him after a few months, taking office in October 1974. After that, on May 21, 1975, the government of Uttar Pradesh determined that Kumarganj, Faizabad would serve as the university's primary campus instead of Mashodha.
On October 10, 1975, Shri A.D. Pandey, IAS (retired), was appointed the university's first vice chancellor.
The Gram Swalabi Vidyalaya Acharya Nagar, Naka, Faizabad building served as the university's temporary home when it first opened. In November 1975, Dr. R.P. Chandola began serving as the university's first registrar. For the purpose of choosing the location for the academic, administrative, and residential blocks of the university in Kumarganj, a committee was established. The report was turned in by the committee on January 22nd, 1976. 10th of July, 1976. The government and U.P. Institute of Agricultural Science, Kanpur gave the paddy research station at Masodha Ghat to the university, together with the ECF and NDS programmes, which subsequently served as the foundation for the university's research efforts. On February 12, 1977, Dr. Kirti Singh assumed the position of first dean of the agricultural faculty and secured approval for the construction of 20 departments in the college of agriculture.
The Mahamaya College of Agriculture Engineering and Technology (MCAET), a constituent college of the ND University of Agriculture and Technology, Kumarganj, Faizabad, was founded in Ambedkarnagar in 2002 by upgrading the department of agriculture engineering in the college of agriculture to meet the needs of development of engineering and technology to suit the condition of the farmers of Eastern Uttar Pradesh, which is characterised by problems with user lands, water looked poorly drain, and other issues.
