The Government College of Mining and Metallurgy was established on March 14, 1963, and offered engineering degrees in Mining and Metallurgy.

Courses in civil, mechanical, and electrical engineering were introduced in 1958-59, and the institution was renamed Government College of Engineering and Technology. On December 1, 2005, the Central Government designated it as a National Institute of Technology (NIT).

NIT Raipur has been working with sincerity and devotion for the improvement of technical education by preparing graduates in engineering and technology for about five decades. The institute currently provides graduate, postgraduate, and doctorate programmes.
