The University of Ottawa, also known as uOttawa or U of O, is a bilingual public research university in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. The main campus is situated on 42.5 hectares (105 acres) in the heart of Ottawa's Downtown Core, adjacent to the residential neighborhood of Sandy Hill and adjacent to the Rideau Canal.
The University of Ottawa was founded as the College of Bytown in 1848 by Joseph-Bruno Guigues, the first bishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Ottawa.
Under the direction of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate, it was renamed the College of Ottawa in 1861 and received university status five years later through a royal charter. Pope Leo XIII granted the university a pontifical charter on February 5, 1889, elevating the institution to the status of pontifical university. On July 1, 1965, the university was reorganized as a corporation, separate from any outside body or religious organization. As a result, the newly formed Saint Paul University, which was federated with the university, retained the civil and pontifical charters. The reorganized university retained the remaining civil faculties.
