About

Cleveland, Ohio's Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) is a private research institution. When Case Institute of Technology, founded in 1880 with Leonard Case Jr.'s endowment, and Western Reserve University, founded in 1826 and named after its location in the Connecticut Western Reserve, formally federated, Case Western Reserve was created.

The Association of American Universities classifies Case Western Reserve University as one of their "R1: Doctoral Universities - Very High Research Activity" members. The university spent $439 million on research and development (R&D) in 2019, placing it 58th overall and 20th among private universities, according to the National Science Foundation. There are more than 100 undergraduate programmes and around 160 graduate and professional options available through the university's eight schools.

17 Nobel laureates have ties to Case Western Reserve's faculty, alumni, or one of its two predecessor institutions. This is where the renowned Michelson-Morley experiment was carried out in 1887, making Albert A. Michelson the first American to receive the Nobel Prize in a scientific field.

The main campus of Case Western Reserve University is located about 5 miles (8 km) east of Downtown Cleveland in the University Circle district, which is home to a number of educational, medical, and cultural organisations. In addition to University Hospitals, the Cleveland Clinic, the Louis Stokes Cleveland Department of Veteran's Affairs Medical Center, the Cleveland Institute of Music, the Cleveland Hearing & Speech Center, the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Cleveland Institute of Art, the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, and the Cleveland Play House, Case Western Reserve has a number of programmes that are taught in collaboration with these University Circle establishments. On the Case Western Reserve campus sits Severance Hall, which serves as the Cleveland Orchestra's home.
