During the establishment of Ontario's college system in 1967, Cambrian College was established as a technical school. It was initially founded with campuses in Sudbury, North Bay, and Sault Ste. Marie; in 1972 and 1973, the campuses in North Bay and Sault respectively became the independent Canadore College and Sault College.
Cambrian was a bilingual institution that provided instruction in both English and French up until 1995. The French programmes were moved to Collège Boréal in that year.
