About

180 years after Bridgewater State University first opened its doors, Horace Mann, America's father of public education and its ardent defender, is still guiding the institution with his spirit, vision, and leadership. Normal schools were established as a result of his belief in the value of public education as well as in the need to standardise or normalise teacher preparation programmes. The third of these schools in the commonwealth, Bridgewater opened its doors in 1840. Together with its sister institutions, it devised a thorough system for teacher preparation that was soon imitated both domestically and internationally.

Bridgewater expanded as society's educational demands changed. In addition to the need for more and better-qualified teachers, a college-level liberal arts curriculum necessitated that the Massachusetts General Court increase course options at the normal schools and establish public higher institutions of learning.

Bridgewater State Institution is currently the fourth-largest public university in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the only full liberal arts university in Southeast Massachusetts. With over 11,000 students enrolled, Bridgewater is the tenth largest overall among the 102 public or private higher education institutions in Massachusetts.

In addition to competing in NCAA Division III sports and being accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE), Bridgewater is recognised by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching as a Master's/Large institution. Its most recent decennial accreditation was granted in 2012.
