About

Having 14 schools and colleges, Howard University was established in 1867 and is a private research institution.

Undergraduate, graduate, and professional degrees are pursued through 143 different academic programmes. The university upholds a dedication to Excellence in Truth and Service and has produced one Schwarzman Scholar, three Marshall Scholars, four Rhodes Scholars, twelve Truman Scholars, twenty-five Pickering Fellows, and more than 165 Fulbright grantees. Compared to other American universities, Howard also generates the most African Americans who get Ph.D.s on campus.

Howard excels in the STEM domains. According to the National Science Foundation, Howard University is the top source of African-American undergraduates who go on to acquire doctorates in science and engineering. The university also has well regarded social work, business, and communications programmes. One Schwarzman Scholar, three Marshall Scholars, four Rhodes Scholars, 12 Truman Scholars, 25 Pickering Fellows, and more than 165 Fulbright grantees have been produced by our institution to date.

The College of Medicine is well-known throughout the world for its distinguished history of preparing students to become capable and caring doctors who treat patients in underserved communities both domestically and overseas. The College is one of America's top institutions for teaching women surgeons and a national pioneer in the study of health inequalities among people of colour. The Howard University Hospital, the Colleges of Dentistry, Pharmacy, Nursing, and Allied Health Sciences are all part of the Howard University Health Sciences division.

The Howard University School of Law has been an architect of social change and an advocate for social justice for more than 150 years. More than 4,000 social engineers, including the first African-American Supreme Court Justice, well-known lawmakers, civil rights lawyers, mayors, and other public servants across the US, have come from it. PreLaw magazine named it as the top legal school for African Americans.

Veritas et Utilitas, the university's motto, stands for truth and service and is a significant component of who we are. Each year, the more than 12,000 undergraduate and graduate students donate hundreds of hours to charitable causes in the neighbourhood of LeDroit Park, throughout the country, and around the globe. More than 200 Howard grads have participated in the U.S. Peace Corps over its 50-year history, the most of any historically Black university.

The University is still dedicated to improving its strategic posture as a leading institution of higher learning in the country. We are perfectly situated to have the next 150 years be as glorious as the last 150 as we commemorate 154 years.
